Summer Hair Care with Karen’s Body Beautiful

Learning how to care for your natural hair is one of the most liberating experiences for women with kinky, curly hair.Yes it will include hundreds of dollars, half-empty bottles of products sitting in your medicine cabinet and more than a few failed hairstyles, but once you get in to the groove of oils, you can consider yourself golden.

For some women, this rhythm does not come easily. I am one of those women — and I have just begun my understanding of what works best for my hair. So to get a bit of insight on how to treat my hair in the summer heat, I sent Karen Tappin, the uber-fabulous founder of Karen’s Body Beautiful, a distressed S.O.S call.

Tappin created Karen’s Body Beautiful in 2003 when the omnipresence of preservatives was high in bath and beauty products. Since this time, Karen’s Body Beautiful has grown in to a natural haircare key player for the strands of natural women. From her kitchen to your bathroom, Tappin’s products untangle the science of coily perfection and here, she gives us notes on summer protective styling, detangling and exactly how she creates her signature fro.

Heirloom of Style: Is there any significance in changing your hair products during the warmer months?

Karen Tappin: Since there is more humidity in the air during the warmer months, you may need to use less product or lighter products in your hair.  Though depending on your warm-weather activities, you may need to change your regimen by shampooing and moisturizing more often if you’re a swimmer.  Adding extra conditioner to your hair while it’s under your swimming cap will lessen the damage that chlorine and salt water can cause to your hair.

HoS: What are some protective styles that you’d suggest for summer?

KT: Braids, twists, flat twists or cornrows are some examples of protective styles you can wear during any season.

HoS: What is the most important thing to remember when styling your hair in the summer heat?

KT: The most important thing to remember when styling your hair is to co-wash or use a sulfate-free shampoo for a moisturizing cleanse, detangle your hair with a natural conditioner and minimize the use of heat when styling your hair.  These steps will allow your hair to maintain its elasticity, thereby reducing the breakage.

HoS: What about detangling. Is it a must? And what products would you recommend for easily detangling your curls?

KT: Detangling allows you to comb through your hair causing minimal breakage.  Detangling is easiest and most gentle when you use a leave-in conditioner.  Karen’s Body Beautiful makes 3 leave-in conditioners that work well in different textures based on your regimen, porosity and hair density.   Our best selling Sweet Ambrosia Leave-in Conditioner moisturizes, softens and detangles thick, kicky/coily hair effortlessly!

HoS: Are there any specific ingredients that contribute to dryness of hair? If so what are they?

KT: There are numerous ingredients present in many products that cause dryness and may damage hair and cause breakage!  Sodium lauryl sulfate, mineral oil, petroleum, propylene glycol are all ingredients that are either toxic and/or cause your hair to be dry and brittle.

HoS: What is a failsafe ingredient to always have in your hair care regimen?

KT: Jojoba Oil is non-greasy, doesn’t clog pores and seals the moisture in your hair and skin.  Aloe Vera promotes hair growth and soothes an itchy scalp. Avocado Oil is loaded with vitamins A, D and E — and  it protects and strengthens the hair.

HoS: Are there any particular foods and or vitamins that one should include in their diet for healthy hair?

KT: Protein is necessary for healthy hair, as it’s the primary component of your hair fibers.  A healthy iron level will minimize hair loss and can be found in dark leafy greens, red meat and egg yolks.  Biotin strengthens your hair and nails and is a very effective supplement to add to your diet.

HoS: What are your best-selling products from Karen’s Body Beautiful?

KT: Sweet Ambrosia Leave-in Conditioner because it moisturizes, softens and detangles really well.  The Luscious Locks Hair Mask is a deep conditioning treatment that is made with nutritious ingredients like Rosemary Essential Oil, Shikaki and Alma, which stimulate hair growth and promote a healthy scalp environment.

HoS: What is your own haircare regimen?

KT: Every two weeks, I shampoo and condition, with the Ultimate Conditioning Shampoo and Complete Hair Conditioner then two weeks later I co-wash with the Luscious Locks Hair Mask.  After I wash my hair, I use the Sweet Ambrosia Leave-in Conditioner then the Super Duper Hydrating Hair Cream, I two strand twist, sit under dryer.  When dry, I take out twists and pick out my ‘fro. Viola! Big fro!
